The Scleral Ossicles of Sceloporine Iguanids: a Reexamination with Comments on Their Phylogenetic Significance
نویسنده
چکیده
A reexamination of the scierai ossicles of sceloporine iguanids was undertaken after conflicting data sets were discovered in the literature. The scierai ossicles of certain other iguanids were also studied for comparative purposes. Sceloporines exhibit much greater variation in ossicle configuration than has previously been reported. This variation is often too great within genera and species to provide useful characters for inferring intergeneric relationships, although a few derived characters do suggest monophyletic groupings of genera. A large number of iguanids exhibit an ossicle arrangement in which there are 14 ossicles of approximately equal size in each eye; three positive and three negative ossicles occupy the same positions in the scierai rings of all these iguanids. This condition is thought to be either the direct or indirect precursor to all patterns of ossicle configuration seen in sceloporines. These patterns seem to have been derived from their presumed precursor by both reductions and losses of ossicles in the dorsal portion of the ring.

The Scleral Ossicles of Opisthocomus and Their Phylogenetic Significance
--Dried scleral rings of Opisthocomus, Galliformes, Cuculiformes, and other birds were examined to determine the pattern of ossicle overlap in Opisthocomus and its bearing on the phylogenetic relationships of this taxon. Although Opisthocomus shares a derived number of 12 scleral ossicles with cuculid Cuculiformes, the pattern of ossicle overlap differs. Nevertheless, fewer modifications are re...
متن کاملTwo – three loci control scleral ossicle formation via epistasis in the cavefish Astyanax mexicanus
The sclera is the protective outer layer of the eye. In fishes, birds, and reptiles, the sclera may be reinforced with additional bony elements called scleral ossicles. Teleost fish vary in the number and size of scleral ossicles; however, the genetic mechanisms responsible for this variation remain poorly understood. In this study, we examine the inheritance of scleral ossicles in the Mexican ...

PURPOSE To investigate the development and mineralization of avian scleral ossicles using fluorescence microscopy in combination with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). METHODS The anterior halves of whole eyeballs from chickens on embryonic (E) days E10 to E21 and Japanese quail on embryonic days E8 to E17 were fixed in 100% methanol...
متن کاملComplex Evolutionary and Genetic Patterns Characterize the Loss of Scleral Ossification in the Blind Cavefish Astyanax mexicanus.
The sclera is the tough outer covering of the eye that provides structural support and helps maintain intraocular pressure. In some fishes, reptiles, and birds, the sclera is reinforced with an additional ring of hyaline cartilage or bone that forms from scleral ossicles. Currently, the evolutionary and genetic basis of scleral ossification is poorly understood, especially in teleost fishes. We...

The origin of neural crest-derived ectomesenchymal condensations located subjacent to scleral papillae and the development of the more deeply situated scleral ossicles were investigated in scleral tissues explanted from the eyes of chick embryos at Hamburger & Hamilton (1952) stages 30-38 (6 1/2-12 days of incubation). Explants were pulse labelled with [3H]thymidine for 4h in vitro. Nuclear cou...
